VA students applied their STEM skills with a trip to GlobalFoundries on April 23. They started the day by touring the TecSmart Facility (next to GlobalFoundries). This is a high tech. satellite school for HVCC where they train students for fields in solar energy, geothermal energy, CAD drawing fields and silicon wafer technician training. At Global Foundries students experienced an opening presentation on how GF produces their chips"From Sand to Silicon chips". Students were shown how to suit up in a clean room suit-following strict protocols. Engineers explained each step the silicon wafer goes through to create a single computer chip. It takes 4-6 months to fill chip orders.
Students also went to the training facility. This is a working silicon chip fab factory floor simulator. We saw the overhead robots delivering the FOUPS filled w/ wafers to different stations to add to the several layers of the silicon wafer. Students got a first hand look at how all of the equipment works and how this process unfolds. Thanks to Mr. Blechinger and Petrone for making this opportunity possible.

School Safety In Focus

The Van Antwerp Middle School Community sends our deepest sympathy and support to the Sandy Hook Elementary School Community for their unfathomable tragedy.

While safety is always a priority at VA, this tragedy has prompted us to take an even closer look at our procedures. The district has put out a resource linked here to assist families in speaking to their children about traumatic news events and school violence. Van Antwerp Middle School has spent the early part of this week reviewing our safety plan with faculty, staff, students and the superintendent.

A letter was sent home with VA students on December 18 in response to the events in Newtown, Connecticut. Click here for a copy.

Attendance
Clarification

Student attendance in grades 6-8 is taken in homeroom to begin the day and during each class period as the day progresses. The homeroom attendance, taken at 8:55-9:02, is used as a daily indication of whether a student is or isn't present in school. Late students have that daily attendance updated from the Main Office upon their arrival.

Period-by-Period class attendance is used as an indication of whether a student was present in a particular class, thereby receiving instruction from a teacher. Students not attending a class for any reason, even very legitimate reasons (music lessons, trip to the nurse, sports dismissal, etc) will be marked absent. This does NOT mean your child skipped/cut a class. We monitor student attendance in classes and would make contact in the event a student skipped or was unaccounted for. Both are extremely rare occurances.

Click here for a district letter explaining how attendance works regarding instructional time in ELA & math.
