When you and/or your child register for a Niskayuna Rowing program, your family automatically becomes a member of the Friends of Niskayuna Rowing (FNR). By joining FNR, you have become part of an organization which promotes education, recreation, and health through the sport of Crew.
Almost 30 Programs
Over the course of one year, FNR manages almost thirty programs through the Niskayuna Central School District’s Athletic Department and Continuing Education Offices. FNR ensures that Niskayuna Rowing programs run smoothly, safely and efficiently, and continually works to enhance the many rowing programs offered. In addition to managing a large number of programs, FNR maintains a large amount of equipment, since Crew is an equipment-intensive sport.
With the exception of the Program Director, FNR is staffed solely by volunteers. Without volunteers, many of the programs supported by FNR would be discontinued or severely limited.
Lots of Logistics
Coaches have a specific job: training their students to be better rowers. Coaches are not responsible for managing the rowing programs. They do not handle registration of rowers, maintain finances, or raise funds to keep costs down. FNR volunteers do these things. Coaches do not organize for the away regattas scholastic teams attend; volunteers do. Volunteers also chaperone these trips, as well as ensure that all rowers and coaches have everything they need to be successful. Without volunteers, Niskayuna would be unable to host regattas, which would limit teams to practices and an occasional regatta or scrimmage hosted by another organization.
Lots of Equipment
Coaches are not responsible for maintaining the equipment required for Crew. They do not repair damage to or do routine maintenance on the launch engines. Volunteers do. Volunteers maintain the shell trailer and chuck-wagon. Dock-in and dock-out would be impossible without the help of volunteers. The safety of Niskayuna Rowing’s facilities is greatly enhanced by the work of volunteers who participate in seasonal boathouse clean-up days. FNR also arranges repairs and maintenance for the shells, oars, radios, cox-boxes, and so much more.
The Bottom Line
In addition, volunteers keep costs down. Without volunteers your program fees would go up dramatically, because, although the Niskayuna Central School District contributes to Crew, the expenses of running the program without a volunteer pool would quickly overwhelm the amount the district can contribute.
