NCSD REINSTATES Daily Bus for High School Rowers to Boathouse - Fall 2013

Today Niskayuna Rowing was informed that the daily bus from high school to boathouse for practice WILL BE provided for our student athletes! Niskayuna Rowing greatly appreciates the District's reinstatement of this bus route.

Previous news item: Niskayuna Rowing has just been informed that the Niskayuna Central School District will not provide a bus for daily transport of rowers from the high school to the boathouse during this fall season. This unanticipated change is the result of additional budget cuts and decisions made by the Athletic Director. Daily bus runs from middle schools to boathouse are not impacted and will continue. Niskayuna Rowing was informed and expects that all daily buses, from middle school to boathouse and from high school to boathouse, will be available to transport our rowers for the Spring 2014 season.

For the past two seasons the majority of our high school rowers have run from the high school to the boathouse to start practices. This method of accessing the boathouse will continue this fall season for our high school rowers. Rowers who have their own cars may opt to drive to the boathouse.

When running, our rowers are instructed to follow a path along Orchard Park Drive to St Joseph Drive where they cross River Road to access the bike path. In addition, our rowers are instructed to depart and run as a group. A buddy system will be implemented to ensure no one runs alone. Current practice is for the slower rowers to head off before the rest of the team to ensure everyone arrives at the boathouse at approximately the same time. Coaches collect and transport backpacks, instruments and other items from the students using the Crew Truck. Rowers that are unable to run will need to carpool or obtain an alternate ride to attend practice. Per district policy, students are not allowed to be transported in the Niskayuna Rowing truck.

Niskayuna Rowing will continue to work with the district to identify alternatives and ensure that daily practice buses are available this spring.

Niskayuna Coxswain, Ally Mayo, signs National Letter of Intent with Buffalo

This past Friday, June 11, Ally Mayo was found sitting in Principal John Rickert's office, an unfamiliar place for Ally at Niskayuna High School. The reason for this visit was to recognize Ally as she signed a National Letter of Intent (LOI) to row for the University at Buffalo. These letters are signed in the spring by athletes all over the country as they commit to their respective institutions. This is a significant event in a young athlete's life, and to show this importance, Principal Rickert had Ally "Officially" sign the LOI document in his office. During the signing photos were taken with other LOI signers, their parents and coaches.

Congratulations Ally! A link to the University of Buffalo's mentioning Ally as one of 7 rowers signing Letters of Intent for the upcoming 2013-2014 season can be found here.

Niskayuna's Ally Mayo signs her LOI to row at University of Buffalo while Program Director and Girls Head Coach, David Buckner, looks on.

It's a wrap! 2013 Section 2 Modified Rowing League Championship marks end of Spring season

** Detailed results available here.**

This past Friday and Saturday Niskayuna hosted the annual Section 2 Modified Rowing League Championship. Over the course of the two day event over 250 middle school age rowers from 8 different programs competed for the title of Section 2 champion. There were over 25 events with the smaller boats, singles and doubles, being on Friday and the larger quads races being held on Saturday. The weather was great for racing, and the sun shined bright on both days. Hopefully a liberal amount of sun screen was applied.

With the help of a small army of volunteers Niskayuna was able to provide a great racing experience for the competitors. We had volunteers parking cars, acting as crossing guards, selling T-Shirts, doing all of the race officiating, and cooking a huge end of the day BBQ for all of the event participants. With out our great volunteer base here at Niskayuna, none of this would have been possible. The Middle School rowers from VA and Iroquois represented Niskayuna proudly this weekend with a nice tally of Medals to bring home.

Over the course of the championship Niskayuna had 5 bronze medal finishes, 7 silver, and 4 gold! The future of Niskayuna Rowing looks bright. It is really great seeing the success of our younger athletes in these kinds of events. Their hard work and dedication to their team has paid off. Our Modified coaches are a class act, and from the results of this weekend you can see that they are great at what they do. Thank you to all that made this such a great weekend.

- David Buckner, Program Director

SRAA Scholastic Championships Regatta Results

Niskayuna brings 36 rowers to the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championships in Camden, NJ.

This past weekend four boats from Niskayuna competed at the Scholastic National Championships held in Camden, NJ. Crews from all over the country were represented at the Scholastic National Championships. Each event took the top 24 teams from local qualifying regattas around the country, and let them face off to compete for the title of Scholastic National Champion. Niskayuna competed in the Girls Varsity Eight, the Girls 2nd Varsity eight, Girls Junior Varsity 8, and the Boy's Freshman eight. Racing at the highest level, Niskayuna was represented well by the 36 athletes that competed in the four different events. Sectional Regatta and Junior B/C Regatta Results

From Dave Buckner, FNR Program Director:
"I just wanted to express to all of you how absolutely proud I was of our team this past weekend. Our kids raced well, we visited the awards tent a lot, and our food tent was great! We saw a lot of red and silver in the front of the pack this weekend. I was at the food tent quite a bit this past weekend, and it was definitely the place to be. There was a large group of parents and rowers cheering on our team as they rowed by. Thank you to all that contributed to the spread that was offered through out the weekend. Thanks to the tail gate style atmosphere we had some pretty tasty things being cooked up.

Let's keep up this spirit going into this next weekend. The New York State Championships are gearing up to be a good weekend for Niskayuna! Saturday and Sunday will be filled with a lot of racing, so let's get together at the food tent this weekend and cheer on our Warriors! Mod parents, you are more than welcome to come and watch the High School crews blaze down the course in their pursuit of a state championship. Go NISKY!

These grants will support projects by municipalities and organizations looking to fix damage, improve water quality and make it easier for people to take advantage of recreational opportunities in and around the Mohawk River.

The Town of Niskayuna was selected to receive a $10,000 grant to assess the viability of building a community facility/boathouse on land adjacent to Aqueduct park. The proposed facility would contain public restrooms, historic displays and a boathouse for Niskayuna Rowing's many rowing programs.
