The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth G. Speare is an historical fiction book.

It all takes place in Ridgebury, Connecticut during the Colonial times. A girl named Kit lived in Barbados with her grandfather since her parents died. When her grandfather died. She had no other family except her Aunt Rachel whom she hardly knew. Kitís grandfather was rich, but when he died, he left a lot of debts to be paid. Kit paid them all of but one. The man wanted her hand in marriage instead of money. Kit got scared and hopped a ship to Connecticut with out sending a letter in advance to her aunt. Kit wasnít welcomed into the family very well. Her Uncle Matthew didnít want her and her cousin was jealous of her clothes. The only people that was glad to see her was her Aunt Rachel and her other cousin Mercy. Kit later met a nice old woman who is claimed to be a witch by the towns people. She became good friends with the woman, but then a plague hit all the children of the town. The townís people blamed the witch for the plague. Kit tried to tell the people of Hannahís (the witches) innocence. Read the book to find out what happens in the end.

I chose this book as my favorite because I loved the action in it. My favorite part is when Kit visited the witch (Hannah). She had to sneak away from her to family to visit Hannah. Hannah seemed so happy to have company. She was not so sad with Kit there, and that part gave me a smile.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction and some great suspense. I would give this book a rating of 10.
