The Yearling is a classic that I read recently, and that I enjoyed. It
starts off when the main character and his father are off on a hunting expedition,
and they kill a doe. However, its (note that its is spelled
i-t-s, NOT i-t-apostrophe-s) fawn is still alive, and the boy feels compelled
to keep it, rather than let it die. The rest of the story follows, with
the main conflict being that the fawn grows up quickly, and that he is having
trouble keeping it. The story ends in a surprising way, but I won't spoil
it for you. I recommend this book to people my age. If you have ever read
Where the Red Fern Grows or Summer of the Monkeys, the writing style is
very similar. The characters seem extraordinarily real, and they have to
save real-life problems.
