A book I would like to recommend to you is Wise Child, by Monica Furlong.
This book also has a prequel, Juniper, but it really doesn't matter what
order you read them in (I read them out of order).
Wise Child's mother is the black sorcerer, Maeve. She lives with her cousins,
but doesn't really seem to fit in. One day she is adopted by Juniper, who
works "white" magic. Wise Child grows up with her, learning to
make, not spells, as she thought, but organic medicines, salves, and lotions
from plants and herbs. Only a few of them were magic. Juniper becomes
like a mother to Wise Child, who soon learns that her bad reputation in
the village is only superstition.
I will leave you to read about the final confrontation with Maeve, but you
should know this: You will really like what this book is made of--one part
creativity to one part great descriptions, suspense, and characters that
seem real, plus a liberal dash of magic!
