The book I read was One More River. I enjoyed this book and really got into
it; sympathizing with characters, disgusted about the war between the Isrealis
and Arabs, and I really liked reading about Leslie, the main character.
This story took place in the 70's. It was about a rich, Canadian girl, Leslie,
who's parents decided to move to Isreal, leaving everything behind to live
in a small Kabutz near the Jordan River, which separated the Isreali and
Arab territory. Leslie hated the idea of having to move and live a "poor"
life in the Kabutz, where even the children worked, and where she would
be separated form her mother and father.
In the book, Leslie's attitude about life slowly changed. She started to
see that money, fame, or physical appearance wasn't everything, and her
friendship with the children at the kabutz grew. She even met a little Arab
boy named Mustapha, by talking to him across the Jordan River in the Arabic
language, for he did not know Hebrew. They became friends, but everyone
told them not to talk to each other, and to hate the Arabs, or hate the
Jews. What could they do?
This was a great book about hope. It gave you hope that Leslie and Mustapha
could be friends, or that the war would end, or that people could be friends
for themselves, not religion or race. I really loved this book, and
I am glad that I read it.
