One book that I really enjoyed recently was the Boggart, by Susan Cooper.
The Boggart is a mischievous little entity who lives in an old, forgotten castle in Scotland belonging to an old, forgotten bloodline of kings. Though the Boggart cannot be seen or heard (except when he is playing his pranks), he always manages to make friends with the occupants of the castle. One such person still survives, but when he dies, the Boggart is left devastated. Not for long, though! When brother and sister Jessup and Emily move in for vacation and are allowed to keep one "souvenir" apiece, he is packed off by accident and turns up in America, he begins playing the pranks he so enjoys. But this time, they are not so harmless.
I won't tell you how the story ends, but I will tell you this much: The characters in this book seem very real. This book is often funny, and is always filled with action and real-life problems.
