A great book I read was Around the World in Eighty Days.
The main character is Phileas Fogg. Mr. Fogg is a rich Englishmen. He is a member
of the Reform Club and has many friends. He has so much money, he doesn't know what
to do with it all. He donates some to friends, schools, and the poor. Mr. Fogg
is always precisely on time.
One night at the Reform Club, Mr. Fogg bets twenty-thousand pounds of his own money
that he could go around the world in eighty days or less. Everyone thought he was
insane, but since he is never late he believes that he would be able to do so. Mr.
Fogg maps out a plan of all the countries he will travel, what types of transportation
he will use, and how long it will take to do presicsley this. Mr. Fogg leaves that
night and brings along his French butler, Passepartout. Together they will try to
travel around the Earth in eighty days or less. This may not be easy though, they could
run into some trouble along the way. A train could break down. They could meet
some Indians who won't let them get by, the weather could be bad. All these things
could slow him down, and if he makes it back to London in eighty days and one minute, he
will loose twenty thousand pounds.
I thought that this was an excellent book. It was a real page-turner. I've read
many of Jules Verne's books, and this one is by far my favorite. I would suggest
this book to anybody, but it is a hard book so if you are a weak reader you may want
to pick something else. I loved Around the World in Eighty Days.
So, if you want a real page-turner, pick this one.
