About the Program
Each year Glencliff Elementary offers a preschool library and physical education orientation program for students who will be eligible for kindergarten in the following September. Starting in November, children spend a half hour with the Library Media Specialist, Ms. McAndrews, and twenty minutes with the physical education teacher, Mrs. DeGuardi. The program is designed to enhance kindergarten readiness and foster a feeling of comfort with the building and personnel. Parents or caregivers enjoy informative parenting programs while their children are in the library and the gym. Start Date: Tuesday Nov. 1, 2011 End Date: Tuesday May 22, 2012 9:05 - 9:25 PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9:25 - 9:50 LIBRARY Parents and preschoolers are also encouraged to take part in our 1000 Book Kid program. This is an at-home reading program that allows 3 and 4 year-old children and their parents to read books from bags located in the school's front hallway. Each bag contains 10 age appropriate books, and after reading 100 bags of books, the child becomes a 1000 book kid. This program provides an opportunity for entering kindergarteners to engage in language development and early literacy experiences that can help them with reading readiness during their first years at Glencliff. A kickoff event occurs each Fall and then it continues as a self-serve program throughout the year. Parents inform the media specialist after they reach 25, 50, and 75 bags as incentives are presented to the child. After reading 100 bags, the child receives a bookbag with the 1000 Book Kid graphic on it and has their picture placed in our alumni album. Alumni are invited to the kickoff each year. All Glencliff preschoolers and their family are urged to participate. LITERATURE LINKS FOR PRESCHOOLERS AND THEIR FAMILIES:
