About the Collector

The O'Conner collection was presented to the Roosevelt Presidential Library by the estate of Basil O'conner in the trust of Robert Van Deusen, Senior Trust officer of the Chemical Bank (liquidators of the estate.) Basil O'Conner was FDR's law partner in New York City. Once FDR became president, his old business partner and friend began to collect any political cartoons about Roosevelt that he could find. The collection, now stored in the research archives of the Library, consists mainly of newspaper clippings and approximately 30,000 political cartoons dating from 1932 to 1943.
