Islamic world Golden Age Empires of Faith

Due:  January 28-29, 2008

Background:  At a time when Europe was mired in superstition, warfare, plague and isolation, a vast  Muslim empire stretched from southern Spain to India to Indonesia united by faith, trade and rule of law.

Task:  Working in small groups, create an artifact exhibit that symbolizes the significant ideas and values of the Muslim golden age.  The presentations will be 5 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes for question and answer.  Each group member is expected to orally participate in an equal manner.  Each group must produce a bibliography of 5 outside, credible sources.  Encyclopedias, electronic or traditional, and Wikipedia are NOT acceptable, under any circumstances.  The artifact presentation must discuss

  1. purpose and intended usage of the artifact
  2. relevant connection the specific geography has to the artifact
  3. the major cultural values that the artifact symbolizes
  4. how the artifact fits into the economic and trade patterns of the Muslim empire.
