azz Fest 2012!
On Wednesday, March 28, the Niskayuna Middle School Jazz Band, High School Jazz Ensemble, High School Stage Band, and Studio
Singers presented Jazz Fest 2012 in the High School Auditorium. Congratualtions to all the talented
musicians and singers, as well as teachers Joe Lamb (MS Jazz), Christina Pizzino (Studio Singers)
and Dave Fisk (Stage Band, HS Jazz).
The culminating festival concert highlighted Middle and High School Ensembles with special guest artist and highly acclaimed saxophonist, Mr. Mark Beaubriand. We are profoundly appreciative of the FOM membership and community support. This generous support provides these uniquely enriching and extraordinarily memorable opportunities for students and gives another opportunity to celebrate 'music lasts a lifetime' with all our students!
The fun continued with Niskayuna Friends of Music hosting the popular "Java Jazz Cafe" of refreshments outside the
auditorium at the "Crossroads" following the concert. FOM wants to thank all the parents who baked for Java Jazz Cafe,
Starbucks for coffee, and all the FOM volunteers who assisted with the event.
Bravos to the District Orchestra Festival!
Niskayuna's passion for music education and performance was abundantly evident at the recent District Orchestra Festival
sponsored in part by Niskayuna Friends of Music (FOM). On Mar. 12, FOM hosted a "Meet and Greet Dinner" at
the school to give parents, teachers, and students a chance to meet Helen Cha-Pyo, Music Director of Empire State Youth
Orchestras
(ESYO). Ms. Cha-Pyo was invited by Director of Music Education, Matthew Cremisio, and Orchestra Faculty to
be this year's guest conductor for the festival. FOM fully subsidized Ms. Cha-Pyo's three-day Niskayuna residency.
In the days leading up to the March 14 festival concert, she worked with over 260 young musicians.

The culminating concert featured orchestra students from grades 6-12, including the highly acclaimed High School
Chamber Strings. Kudos to our district orchestra faculty for their hard work: Joan Brown (Allegro Orchestra, 6th Gr.),
Stacey McClenon (Presto Orchestra, 7th Gr.), Teresa Broadwell (Scherzo Orchestra, 8th Gr.) and Brian Mooney
(Chamber Strings and HS Symphony Orchestra). The new addition of winds to the Scherzo Orchestra was an extra treat!
We Have a New Logo!
NHS students in Mrs. Leach's "Studio in Graphic Design" class competed to design a new logo for "real-life" client Friends
of Music as part of their course curriculum. Junior Max Medina created the winning design, chosen by Music Director Matthew
Cremisio and a few members of FOM. Reportedly, the decision was not easy due to the high quality of the submitted designs.
Max's design has already begun appearing on many of FOM's publications, including this website. FOM graciously thanks each
design student for the hard work and thought put into their designs.
Niskayuna Friends of Music hosted student logo winner Max Medina and his family at their March 6th meeting with a reception in Max's honor. Max's teacher, Melissa Leach, also attended the reception unveiling a poster of all the student submissions. Both posters will be featured at all of the March concerts. Here are pictures of the logo reception

As conductor of the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Strings, his students earned multiple Gold and Gold with Distinction awards at NYSSMA Major Organization festivals. The Symphony Orchestra also had the honor of performing at the NYS School Boards Association Convention in Rochester, NY in 2000. The students and staff at Niskayuna are grateful for Mr. Neubert's years of dedication and commitment to
our musical education. We wish him the best of luck and much happiness in the years to come.

throughout.

azz Fest 2009...Was Pretty Fine
(Click for photos on the Albany Jazz
website)
Jazz Fest 2009, featuring the Niskayuna Middle and High School Jazz Ensembles, High School Stage Band, and Studio Singers, took place Wednesday, February 4, 2009 in the High School Auditorium. Congratulations to all the talented musicians and singers, as well as teachers Joe Lamb (MS Jazz), Christina Pizzino (Studio Singers) and Dave Fisk (Stage Band, HS Jazz).
Joining this year's festival was educator and jazz guitarist, Jesse Lewis
(www.JesseLewisMusic.com), one of the young rising stars in the
City's creative jazz scene. Lewis discovered the guitar and Jazz music during his High School years in Boston. He
studied at the University of New Orleans under the tutelage of guitar legend, Steve Masakowski and collaborated with
other New Orleans notables including Nicolas Payton, Ellis Marsalis and Johnny Vidacovich. His debut album "Jesse
Lewis Union" (Lakefront Digital) earned him critical acclaim. Jesse moved to New York City in 2002 to complete his
degree at the Manhattan School of Music and currently performs with other Jazz greats at venues such as Smalls, 55 Bar,
The Jazz Gallery and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Lewis manages a studio of talented young guitarists and is Coordinator
of Guitar for the New York Summer Music Festival
In addition to performing with our jazz bands, Mr. Lewis spent time in Niskayuna music classrooms sharing his expertise with our high school and middle school jazz students. An extra treat occurred Monday, February 2nd, at the Robb Alley performance venue at Proctors Theater (i.e., The Muddy Cup). Mr. Lewis performed with our very own Jazz Ensemble teacher, Dave Fisk, on saxophone, backed up by a wonderful drummer and bass player. And that's not all! Several of our Niskayuna jazz students were able to join in with them.
Mr. Lewis' visit was proudly sponsored by the Niskayuna Friends of Music. FOM again hosted the "Java Jazz Cafe"
of free refreshments outside the auditorium following the concert and extends a hearty thank-you to all who contributed
refreshments or money.
Fundraiser Breakfast Hit the Spot
On Saturday, November 8,
FOM had a Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast at the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar near Home Depot in Schenectady.
FOM extends a hearty thank-you to all who
supported the event. We especially appreciate the high school student workers and entertainers/performers (who got
up very early on a Saturday morning), and Applebee's for making it a great experience and great fundraiser. Oh,
and the pancakes were delicious!
Music Apparel Sale Appreciation
The music-logo shirt orders have
been filled. We want to thank Shrilata Nath (chair), Lori Fletcher and Felicia Campo as well
as Amy Bennett of JCB Specialties for all their hard work. We also thank everyone who placed orders and hope they are enjoying
their shirts!
A Fond Farewell
Students, parents and teachers said goodbye to choral teacher Paula Brinkman at the end of this school year. She is
retiring after 35 years of teaching in Niskayuna schools, most recently at the High School. She will be remembered not only
for directing several high-achieving choral groups at the High School, but also for her great inspiration to so many. For articles
on Mrs. Brinkman, go to "Notes" in the menu and look at the May 2008 issue.
PRISM 2008 Was a Trip to
"The Planets"
The 9th annual PRISM concert was presented Saturday, June 7 in the Niskayuna High School auditorium. This year's
theme was "The Planets", continuing the tradition of naming the concert after one of its featured works. The Planets
is a popular seven-movement orchestral suite composed by Gustav Holst almost 100 years ago.
In the usual program format, the student performers are mostly self-prepared and faculty coach the performers as needed. The musical selections are completely unique every year. The Symphony provides the theme 'thread' by playing portions of the title work throughout the evening.
The variety of performances is always broad: String Quartets, Solos, Trios, etc.; vocal selections - Show Tunes, Classical Art Songs, Popular Songs, etc.; Jazz groups, Brass groups, Electronic Music performances, Classical Piano solos, original compositions, Chamber Strings, etc. This year was no exception, with 26 different pieces performed (not including the 6 "Planets" movements), including some student compositions.
And yet, the performances blend into a single work. The idea of PRISM is that there are many colors which emerge from a
single source of light. The 'light' being the talented student performers - the various performances make for a 'colorful'
concert. Performances are non-stop, one to the other providing continuous music without applause until the very end of the
show. It is called 'A Sensory-Surround-Sound-Sensation!'
Gala Featured
(How Fortunate!!)
How fortunate we were that the Music Department presented Carl Orff's masterpiece CARMINA BURANA in concert on
Thursday, May 29 as this year's Gala Concert. The NHS Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorale
were joined by a special Children's Chorus and guest soloists Elissa Premerlani (Class of 1999),
Jesse Conti (Class of 2005) and Eric Rubinstein. How fortunate the audience was to hear this masterwork
done so beautifully by this group of talented students and soloists.
Good fortune came in other forms, as well. The profits from the ticket sales benefit the Niskayuna Friends of Music Scholarship Fund. This is so appreciated by FOM and the students who will benefit from it. FOM also had the good fortune of many donations of products from local businesses for our concert decorations and post-concert reception. The generous donors were:
John A. Burger Farm and Greenhouse
Felthousen's Florist and Greenhouses
Niskayuna Consumers Cooperative, Inc.
The Party Warehouse
Price Chopper Food Stores

Something to Sing About!
High School vocal teacher Paula Brinkman
reports that Concert Chorale was selected to appear at the annual NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester.
On Saturday, December 1st at 10:15am they presented a 30-minute concert for music educators from around the
state. This is a very high honor, since only six ensembles from the entire state, vocal or instrumental, from
elementary through college level, are selected. How great that their
hard work and dedication have paid off! Congratulations to all!
Fundraiser Breakfast Hit the Spot
On Saturday, October 27,
FOM had a Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast
at the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar near Home Depot in Schenectady. FOM extends a hearty thank-you to all who
supported the event. We especially appreciate the high school student workers and entertainers/performers (who got
up very early on a rainy, Saturday morning), Applebee's and the restaurant manager, Scott Malagrida, for making it
a great experience and great fundraiser. Oh, and the pancakes were delicious!
Rosendale Chorus on Ice
Saturday, October 13, the Rosendale Elementary Chorus opened the first home
game of the season for the Albany River Rats hockey team at the Times
Union Center in Albany. The chorus was brought back for this night as a
result of their performance and enthusiastic ticket sales in Spring 2007.
The group performed "God Bless America" beautifully, standing on
a carpet in new matching chorus shirts designed by 5th grade parent,
Angela Preisman, and screen printed by JCB Specialties of Albany. Their
director, Holly Pierce, shares that River Rats staff complimented the chorus
on their organization and behavior getting on and off the ice. Parents and
families occupied a reserved section of seats numbering over 250.
Congratulations fourth- and fifth-graders on your awesome, patriotic
performance!!!

Such Great Heights...
The High School Concert Chorale, Bel Canto Voices (Paula Brinkman, Conductor), and Symphonic Band (Eric
Hughes, Conductor), traveled to Washington D.C. for the North American Music Festival April 19-22.
At the end of their 16-festival season, NAMF ranked the ten high scores for each ensemble division. All three groups
were awarded places in the "Top Ten" in their respective divisions. Symphonic Band placed 9th out of 56 bands,
Concert Chorale placed 2nd out of 43 mixed choirs, and Bel Canto Voices placed 2nd out of 16 madrigal choirs.
Pretty terrific, these kids, wouldn't you say?
The Prism Concert Was Good All Over
On June 2, high school musicians presented the annual Prism Concert. This year's theme was Fantasia
and performers included The Symphony Strings, Chamber Strings, Jazz Ensemble, and Stage Band. Making
it even more special were the many student solo and small ensemble performances. The types of music truly
spanned a broad spectrum, including original compositions by students and faculty. The uninterrupted music
was played in several locations throughout the mostly dark auditorium, lasting 2 hours and keeping the
record-size audience glued to their seats despite the sweltering heat. Fantastic!
From Russia, With Love
On May 24, Niskayuna High School presented a concert of music by
Sergei Prokofiev from
the epic 1938 film "Alexander Nevsky". The Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorale performed
this masterwork in its original Latin and Russian text and featured soloist Emma Ladouceur, Class of 2007.
Film lovers enjoyed seeing segments of the film during the performance. This music is considered by many
to be at a very high level of difficulty. What an accomplishment!
Making it even sweeter, the proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the Friends of Music Scholarship Fund, to the tune of $800. Many thanks for supporting our music students.
We also extend a hearty thank-you the following businesses that supported our post-concert reception:

A Big, Beautiful Choral Festival
On Wednesday, March 21, about 1,000 Niskayuna school students performed in the District's triennial Choral Festival
in the Niskayuna High School gym. The Concert featured special guest conductor, Dr. David Dickau, a nationally recognized and widely published composer.
Among the pieces performed by choral students from grades 4-12 were I Dream a World, in which Andre Thomas brings
to life the inspiring poetry of Langston Hughes. The students also performed several original compositions of Dickau,
including Stars I Shall Find; Heart, We Will Forget Him; and O, My Luve's Like a Red, Red Rose.
Dickau is the Director of Choral Activities at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he leads the Concert Choir and teaches conducting and composition. He is the composer of View from the Air, which was commissioned by the Anne Morrow and Charles H. Lindbergh Foundation in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's historic transatlantic flight.
The concert was sponsored by the Niskayuna Central School District supported in part by the Niskayuna Friends of Music.
We extend a huge thank-you to Starbucks for hosting a post-concert reception and to Latham Farms Hannaford for donating the sheet cake.
United We (Shared) Stands
The Schenectady Symphony and Niskayuna High School Symphony
Orchestras presented a shared-stands concert at Proctor's Theater on March 16, 2007.
The concert marked the culmination of an educational enrichment and mentoring
opportunity that paired students and musicians in performing challenging classical pieces, including
Symphonic Metamorphoses of Themes of Weber by Hindemith and Serenade for Strings by Tchaikovsky. The
performances were conducted by Charles Schneider, Director of the SSO, and Christopher Neubert, Director of the NSO.
"What a wonderful opportunity for our students," said Neubert. "The program promises to inspire them, expand their skills, and deepen their appreciation of classical music. We are thrilled to be participating in this very worthwhile program and appreciate the generous support of the Symphony and its sponsors in making this possible."
This program was made possible by the generosity of the New York State Council on the Arts, the Community Foundation for the Capital Region's Niskayuna Community Foundation, the William Gundry Broughton Charitable Private Foundation, Schenectady Symphony Orchestra Association, and the Niskayuna Friends of Music.
A scrumptious dinner of pizza, ziti, salad and cake was served to the musicians by Niskayuna Friends of Music volunteers. Thanks to Home Style Restaurant for the discounted pizza and to Latham Farms Hannaford for the donated sheet cake. And a round of applause for all the volunteers who served it up.

Lordy, We're Forty!
Thanks to Wendell Phillips,
the first Director of Music Education in Niskayuna, our organization was born 40 years ago. And, thanks to the
generous support of this community, it continues its tradition of promoting music excellence in our schools.
Thanks for Another Great Year!
In '05-'06 the record level of financial support for FOM that we saw in '04-'05 was matched! This
supported many wonderful music projects, events and student scholarships. The other part of the equation
is the volunteer support. The time and effort of those who help at concerts and other events contributes
to their success. And where would we be without all the donated cookies and brownies?
Students Got a Bang Out of Taiko!
On May 26, the Burlington Taiko Group presented their
drumming at Iroquois Middle School. There were 2 performances so that all students could see the show.
Taiko is a form of ancient Japanese ritual drumming. The students were wowed by the high energy and beautiful
coordination of the drumming and dancing. Some lucky students even got to go on stage and try it for themselves!
This event was made possible by funding from Friends of Music and the Iroquois PTO. More pictures
are coming, so please check back.

The Mozart Gala was here!
On May 25th, the Niskayuna High School Concert Chorale and Symphony Orchestra
performed a tribute to
the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. They did an outstanding job on 2 pieces. The Die Zauberflote Overture
was magical and the Requiem was divine. Congratulations to Paula Brinkman, Brian Mooney, Christopher Neubert
and both ensembles for this accomplishment. And thanks to Eric Hughes for putting the event together.
The celebration continued
with a variety of luscious
birthday cakes donated by Tracy and Francesca, LLC. Thanks to all of the Friends of Music volunteers
who set up, decorated and cleaned up the cake area.
How could it get better than that?
Well, the proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the NHS Hurricane Katrina Relief
Fund. This fund benefits the Alief Independent School District in Texas, which has taken in over 2000
displaced students from New Orleans.
Go Wolfy!

Music Department Staff Changes
Thanks for a Great Year!
We deeply appreciate the support of all who bought memberships, donated baked goods for sales or helped at concerts and
events. Nothing we did would have been possible without you.
We're very pleased that FOM memberships have increased 20% over the 2003-2004 year. This is especially important because the Music Department budget had been cut 40% this year.
We are sadly saying goodbye to a few longtime board members. Co-Presidents Cherie Gold and Laurel Burns and Treasurer Donna Donnelly all "retired" from FOM at the end of the year. We appreciate the time and commitment they gave over the years.
Year Ends with a Big Change
Kent Burchill, District Music Department Director for 22 years, retired at the end of the school year. His
friendly, knowledgable guidance at FOM meetings was very appreciated and his presence will be missed. We all wish
him well in his future endeavors. There is a short article by Mr. Burchill in the Spring 2005 "Notes".
Christopher Neubert is taking over the reins. He has been on the high school faculty for several years as
director and conductor of string ensembles. FOM extends congratulations to Mr. Neubert and we look forward to
working with him.
Article on Mr. Neubert
NYSSMA Was Nice, Ma!
Niskayuna School District hosted a large NYSSMA Festival, June 3rd and 4th, for solos and small ensembles (duets, trios, etc.).
About 3400 students in grades 5-12 from all over the Capital District and farther participated. Mr. Eric Hughes of our music
faculty was the coordinator of the Festival and asked Friends of Music to provide the meals and refreshments for the judges
and to have a large concession stand available for all the students and parents.
We wish to thank the many who volunteered to help. Their time and effort made the event a success. Special thanks goes to Diane Smith of FOM who masterminded the volunteer recruitment and the provision of refreshments.
We also thank the following vendors for their donations:
Nisky Vocalist Shines
Jesse Conti, a Niskayuna High School Senior, has been on a roll this year with many accomplishments in his
vocal endeavors. He has been named the 2005 winner of the Mohawk Valley Chorus Vocal Scholarship. As such,
Jesse not only received a cash award, but was also invited to appear on the Mohawk Valley Chorus' spring concert series
as a featured soloist. This is Jesse's third vocal competition within the year, having previously been successful at
the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society and Mendelssohn Club vocal competitions. Jesse plans on majoring in music education
next fall. Congratulations, Jesse!
Nisky Student Selected for Grammy Presentation
Patrick Keller, a Niskayuna High School Senior, was among a small group of high school
