As
a point of information, one might be interested to know that over 227 separate
art awards are represented at this eveningÕs award ceremony. Approximately 66 of
these awards are determined by the Fine Arts Faculty. The remaining award winners are selected
by jurors and professional artists coordinated by the sponsors of the individual
events.
It is the philosophy of the
Fine Arts Awards Committee for the High School Art Department to attempt to
recognize as many different student artists as possible. We congratulate all of our student

SUSAN E. SHEPHERD MEMORIAL ART SCHOLARSHIP:
|
This
award is given in memory of Susan E. Shepherd, sponsored by her friends;
Karen and Thomas Ambrose, Barbara Colose, Linda Cushner,
also SueÕs sister Carol Welch and brother Doug Shepherd. Sue, Karen, Barbara, Linda, Doug and
Carol all grew up in the same neighborhood and attended Niskayuna Schools. When Sue died early in her life, her friends
and family wanted to help a Niskayuna art student in her memory. One
of the things that Sue enjoyed and kept her focused in life was her
artwork. We
hope to further the selected studentÕs love and talent for art by supporting
their choice for higher education. Morgan Munger |

Eve was an abstract expressionist artist who began painting at
the age of sixty-four. Her art was inspired by a willingness to
experiment with new techniques, resulting in expressions of unconfined
movement and free spirit. During her painting career she was the
recipient of many awards. One of her works is on permanent display in the
Great Hall of the U.S. Commerce Building in Washington, DC, and others are in
the National Headquarters of the City of Hope in Duarte, CA and the Dade
County, FL Public Library. Her paintings are in private collections throughout
the U.S. as well as in Israel, Germany and Great Britain. |

Club Advisors: Mrs. Leach and Mr. Marcellino The
Nisk-Art Magazine Club annually produces a Niskayuna High School student Art
Magazine. Students are involved
in fund-raising activities from the beginning of the school year to raise
money for the publication of the magazine in the spring. Students from grades 9 – 12
submit artwork to be judged and selected by club members for the magazine. Selected artwork is photographed and
placed into a page layout software program. Student club members edit and proof
the final layout before sending it to a professional printer. Students sell the edition at various
school events to raise funds for the next yearÕs publication. This process teaches students the
reality of creating and publishing a professional magazine, from the
financial, the artistic, to the editorial. It is a very rewarding experience for
students and advisors.

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION AWARDS
SJCC LOGO
DESIGN CONTEST WINNER
|
|
The
Schenectady Jewish Community Center held a logo design contest beginning in
October to celebrate 90 years of serving the community. The contest was open
to Niskayuna High School art students. The criteria for the design were to
include the many services that the JCC has provided the community for the
past 90 years. |
After
much deliberation, JCC leaders, including board president, Sharon Cutler,
selected the winning logo design. The winner is Amy Yao, a senior at
Niskayuna High School, and the co-Editor-in-Chief of the High School Yearbook.
Amy designed her logo in Mrs. LeachÕs Advanced Studio in Computer Arts class.
She juxtaposed the Star of David with silhouettes of children, teens, and
adults in a variety of actions. The original winning design will be combined
with the JCCÕs own logo as well.
As
part of the celebration for 90 years of community service, the JCC held a
ÒKick-OffÓ. The Kick-Off on, December 19th. The event will included an unveiling of Amy YaoÕs winning logo design that
will be featured on the JCCÕs letterhead, brochures, flyers, and posters for
the next year. Community leaders, political dignitaries, JCC leaders, and press
were in attendance.
ROOTS &
WISDOM GRAPHIC DESIGN PROJECT
|
The
Director of Outreach, Christine Horigan, approached
Mrs. LeachÕs Graphic Design class to have them produce a flyer for the local
group Roots and Wisdom. Roots and
Wisdom is an organization with a mission to Òengage the diverse population of
Schenectady CountyÕs youth in serving their community through the support of
a sustainable local food systemÓ.
The chosen flyer will be used by the group in
mailings and advertisements.
Using Adobe Illustrator, students learned the basics of page layout
and what works and in an informative way while still appealing to the
eye. The class submitted many
excellent flyer choices and the decision was a difficult one. Roots and Wisdom chose to use a
combination of two studentÕs designs: Emily Hartana

NISKAYUNA HS FILMMAKER ENVISIONS IF HE HAD A TRILLION
DOLLARS:
|
|
Student filmmaker Kristjan Salasoo received ÒSpecial RecognitionÓ this year for his use of Live Music and
Student Art in his production in the national youth video contest – If
I Had a Trillion Dollars. The American Friends
Service Committee and National Priorities Project sponsored a youth video project to help young people (13-23) enter
the cost of war in discussion on how monies were being allocated in our
country. |
|
After deciding a point of view, students were asked
to share their ideas about what they would do – for themselves, their
family and/ or their community – with $1 trillion by making a short
(1-3 minute) video. Students were
asked to consider the fact that the money that is being spent on the U.S.
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan reached $1trillion on May 30, 2010. This
money could be spent in our communities on many things that now face cuts,
like after school programs, art and music programs, and summer jobs. KristjanÕs
perspective on how the trillion dollars could have been spent on Art and
Music programs in the public schools across the country. His position is creating this short
video was that these programs are arguably the most important programs a
school can offer a student. Mr. Salasoo believes
that these arts programs generate creative thinkers, which is more important
than have countless kids who can memorize a formula. The budgets for these
classes cannot and should not be cut. His video showcases this point of view. Congratulations Kristjan Salasoo! To see KristjanÕs video,

ÒThe Fantastical SelfÓ

An exhibition inspired by the work of artist
Robert Gullie
The
Fantastical Self a Collaborative Project with Niskayuna Photography
Students and Sunnyview Hospital Studio in Art Students
This inter-generational project, The Fantastical Self, was
built upon the concepts and skills developed in past projects – My
World and Welcome to It, A Sense of Place, and Navigating the
Imagination. Students viewed
and discussed the work of photographer/ mixed media artist Robert Gullie along
with various Surrealist and Egyptian artists. Both groups of students created a
mixed-media collage that combines the photographic self-portrait with found
images of various animals, birds, or insectsÕ parts. This combination of subject matter will
allow the students to visually communicate themselves as a newly created
surreal species. The students will
use additional found imagery and paint to design the environment / atmosphere.
The photography students (along with Mr. Honicki and Mr. Gullie)
generated ideas for both components of the project through lectures, hands-on
demonstrations, brainstorming and interviews. The NHS students created their own
surreal photographic paintings/collages before mentoring the adult artists in
the Studio in Arts program at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital through the
same process.

A roundtable discussion of the collaborative
activities between Niskayuna High School media arts students and adult artists
from the Studio in Art program at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital.
Out
of the Sunnyview/Niskayuna collaborations a roundtable panel discussion on the ART: A Prescription For Life
collaborative projects was held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 in the Little
Theater at Niskayuna High School.
ART: A Prescription for
Life is
the title of a series of projects and exhibitions that have come about through
the collaboration between the Viewpoint GalleryÕs Studio Art Project and the
Art department at Niskayuna High School.
The
collaborations have included:
ART: A Prescription For Life
(2004) - Documentary
My
World and Welcome To It (2006) - Photography
A
Sense of Place (2007) – Digital Collage
Navigating
the Imagination (2008) – Mixed Media Assemblage
The
Fantastical Self (2010) – Mixed Media Photographic Collage

The five projects and exhibitions at both the
hospital and the high school have allowed the Capital District Community at
large to experience the artistic accomplishments of these students and see
that creativity has no limits.
Helping people understand that the creative process can continue to be
expressed even after a traumatic illness or injury. In addition, these projects have
enabled the high school students to develop strategies for interacting with
adults with physical disabilities or limited verbal communication
skills. These students can then
take these new skills into communities in which they live. |
