Eve
WasserÕs family and friends created this award in 2007 to commemorate her
100th birthday. Eve is an
abstract expressionist artist who began painting at the age of

NISK-ART MAGAZINE CLUB:
|
Club Advisors: Mrs. Leach and Mrs. Valente The
Nisk-Art Magazine Club annually produces a Niskayuna High School student Art
and Literary Magazine. Students
are involved in fund-raising activities from the beginning of the school year
to raise money for the publication of the magazine in the spring. Students from grades 9 – 12
submit artwork and literature to be judged and selected by club members for
the magazine. Selected artwork
is photographed and literature is retyped and placed into a page layout
software program. Student club
members edit and proof the final layout before sending it to a professional
printer. Students sell the new
edition at various school events to raise funds for the next yearÕs
publication. This process
teaches students the reality of creating and publishing a professional
magazine, from the financial, the artistic, to the editorial. It is a very rewarding experience for
students and advisors. |

ART:
A PRESCRIPTION FOR LIFE – Navigating the Imagination NHS Photography instructor,
Steve Honicki, with the Arts Project at Sunnyview Hospital have received a
$1500 grant for a collaborative mixed media assemblage project involving
photography students from Niskayuna High School, adult art students from
Sunnyview Hospital. |
The
project took place from March through May 2008 and included professional
artist, Gail Nadeau, who provided technical and conceptual assistance through
demonstrations and the sharing of her work.
This
inter-generational project, Navigating the Imagination, built
upon the concepts and skills developed in past projects – My World and
Welcome To It and A Sense of Place - funded
by the Community ART$ Grants.
After viewing and discussing the work of photographer/ mixed media
artist Gail Nadeau along with such artists as Salvador Dali, DeChirico, and
Joseph Cornell, both groups of students created a mixed-media assemblage using
photographic images and low-relief found objects that depicts a personal dream
experienced during the waking hours.
The
photography students (along with Mr. Honicki and Ms. Nadeau) generated ideas
for both components of the project through lectures, hands-on demonstrations,
brainstorming and interviews. The
NHS students created their own surreal assemblage before mentoring the adult
artists through the same process.
The culminating
exhibition and reception at the Viewpoint Gallery/Sunnyview Rehabilitation
Hospital took place May 28, 2008 allowing the community at
large to experience the artistic accomplishments of these students and
understand how the creative process can continue to be expressed even after the
experience of a traumatic physical disability. In addition this project will enable the high school
students to develop strategies in interacting with adults, not only with
physical disabilities, but with limited verbal communication skills in the
hopes that they will bring those strategies with them as they go out into the
communities in which they live.
