Following last year's collaboration with
"Roots and Wisdom", high school students in Mrs. Leach's "Studio in
Graphic Design" class designed logos for "real-life" client, "Friends
of Music" as part of the "Studio in Graphic Design" curriculum. The
project became a logo competition where the winning logo would be
featured on the organization's newsletters, flyers, and website. The
project was coordinated with the help of music director Matt Cremisio
in November. Students designed their logos with their target audience
in mind as well as the key concepts and values of the organization. The
organization wanted a logo that was timeless, scalable, and would
connect with children, teens, and adult members of the Niskayuna
community. The organization, founded in 1961, includes aspects of music
such as band/instrumental groups, and choral/orchestra groups. F.O.M.
also provides scholarships for Niskayuna music students and support for
music education programs, community music events and concerts. Students
designed their logos with these themes in mind. The Art Students worked
with the Adobe Illustrator software program utilizing previously
learned tools and techniques. They combined their technical skills with
the elements of art such as line, shape, and color to create a visually
balanced and unified logo design.
Students learned how to "pitch" their designs to
persuade the Friends of Music members to choose their design through a
specific set of analytical based questions created by Mrs. Leach.
Students were able to better prepare and articulate their creative and
technical design processes in this manner. This method of persuasive
argument is beneficial to students that may also be working with
clients in the graphic design field in the future. Students
successfully presented their logo designs to several of the Friends of
Music members and the music director in late November.
On December 12th, Mr. Cremisio, along with F.O.M.
committee member Lori Fletcher and high school liaison Carol Rowell,
announced the winning logo designer during class. The student whose
logo was chosen after three weeks of deliberation was junior Max
Medina. His winning logo design incorporated the Niskayuna "N"
juxtaposed with painterly styled symbols such as a violin, trumpet, and
a music note. Max's logo will be featured on a poster including his
artist's statement describing the creative process behind his winning
design. The other class designs will be featured on a separate poster
near the auditorium as well. Congratulations Max and thank you to all
of Mrs. Leach's first semester graphic design students for your time,
patience, and creativity. Thank you to Mr. Cremisio and Friends of
Music for this exciting real-life educational opportunity!

NISKAYUNA ART STUDENT
AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS ART SCHOLARSHIP
Recent Niskayuna High School graduate, Chris Finn was awarded the
prestigious The Elaine Goldman and Aida Snow Scholarship from the New
York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA). His Media Arts
teacher and NYSATA member, Steve Honicki, nominated Chris for this
award.
The scholarship has been generously endowed by Ms. Snow and Ms.
Goldman. Ms. Elaine Goldman is a retired LIATA/Nassau member of NYSATA
who continues to participate at the regional level, and is a frequent
presenter at the state conference. Regretfully Ms. Aida Snow has passed
away, but she has left a legacy of enabling NYSATA to help visual art
students in New York State pursue their dreams.
After reviewing over a hundred applications, the award committee chose
Chris' as exemplary. His application included a selection of
works from his portfolio along with a personal essay that described his
artistic process and vision.
Chris is currently continuing his passion for the media arts by
studying Motion Media Design at Savannah College of Art & Design in
Savannah, Georgia.
Mr. Finn will be publically recognized at the Annual Student
Scholarship Awards on Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Westchester
Marriott, in Tarrytown, New York as part of this year's annual NYSATA
conference.
