Classroom Management in Kindergarten at Birchwood Elementary School

Children are so excited to be in school, but also can be nervous, or unsure of the expectations for their behavior in school.  It is for this reason that I try to be very consistent and predictable in my management of their behaviors.  I have high expectations for their behavior, but understand that all people sometimes make mistakes or forget a rule.  I believe that the classroom management that is used in my class help to organize and make the kids understand my expectations.

In the classroom on the wall entering the classroom your children will find our “Have a great day!” chart.  Each child has a pocket with their name on it containing three colored cards (green, yellow, red).  Every child begins every day with a green card.  If they stay on green all day they will receive a sticker on their own calendar for that day.  If a child has broken a rule (i.e. running in the classroom) they will be reminded of our classroom rules, if they decide not to make a choice to change their behavior they will have to flip their card to yellow.  In this case they will not get a sticker and note of why will be written on their calendar.  If a child does something particularly dangerous they will be asked to flip their card to red.  If this occurs, the student will not get a sticker and I will be calling home.

With all of this being said, many children will never receive a yellow card, and a red card is very rarely seen.  If your child loses a card a few times in the beginning of the year, don’t be too stressed out.  Sometimes it takes losing a card a few times in the beginning to remember the rules.  It seems like the most popular times to lose are in the beginning and the end of the yearJ  I try to make sure the students understand that I am not mad at them, but in order to keep everyone safe we need rules.  Most importantly tomorrow is a new day!
